Sacked as APC chairman, ‘dethroned’ in Edo — what next for Oshiomhole?

AUTHOR:Chinedu AsaduSEPTEMBER 20, 2020 5:48 PM

In just three months, the political career of Adams Oshiomhole has suffered a huge setback. Some political experts believe his career might have been reduced to rubble by no other person than the former Edo state governor himself.Advertisement

Not so long after the court of appeal affirmed his sack as the national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), he has been dislodged in Edo where he governed from 2008 to 2016.

The tussle with Godwin Obaseki whom he helped into power is one of his greatest undoing as he has not just lost political relevance in his stronghold but suffered a heavy blow. After he fell out with Obaseki, the APC executive committee in his ward in Etsako west local government suspended him. The APC chairmen in the 18 local government areas of the state also passed a vote of no confidence on him, accusing him of working against the party interest.

Although Oshiomhole appeared to have dismissed the suspension as a child’s play, it would later cost him his position as the national chairman of the party as a high court in Abuja suspended him on that basis.Advertisement

Danlami Senchi, a judge, had ruled in March that it was wrong of the APC to have kept Oshiomhole as chairman after he was suspended by his state chapter of the party. The final attempt to get him back into the party’s hierarchy failed in June after the appellate court ruled there was no justifiable basis for an appeal against the court ruling suspending him.

In the heat of the crisis, the national working committee of the APC was dissolved and his loyalists lost control of the party.

While it appeared as if Obaseki was losing grounds ahead of the governorship election, considering how popular the APC had been in the state, Oshiomhole relocated to Benin where he became the face of the APC governorship campaign, with Osagie Ize-Iyamu as a spectator in his own game.Advertisement

His authority as a two-term governor and a former national chairman was not in doubt.  Some people had, in fact, likened him to the “almighty” Bola Tinubu who has remained powerful in Lagos despite leaving office as governor in 2007.

To all the ears that cared to listen, Oshiomhole boasted of how the APC will defeat Obaseki in the election and even apologised for “selling him” to Edo people as the best fit for governor in 2016.

But Obaseki who wanted to beat the master in his own game appealed to the people as the “Edo No be Lagos” mantra resonated among the electorate.

In the closing days of his campaign, Obaseki boasted to his supporters in Oredo local government which eventually gave him 43,498 votes, the highest in the election, that having dealt with Oshiomhole at the national level of APC, the next target was to bury him politically.Advertisement

“This election is a contest with Oshiomhole. We have dealt with him at the national level, we will bury him politically in this election,” he had said.

Well, the elections are now over and it has become clear that the voters trounced godfatherism. So, what’s next for Oshiomhole? Reconcile with Obaseki to regain relevance in the state’s political stage, like the average Nigerian politician, or return to the labour union as the comrade he used to be?

Phillip Shaibu, Edo State Deputy Governor, has spoken on his alleged arrest by security agencies.

Shaibu said it is untrue that he was caught with illegal arms.

His spokesman, Benjamin Atu, said this in a statement on Friday.

He accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) former national chairman, Adams Oshiomhole of plotting to use federal might to intimidate him and Governor Godwin Obaseki.

Atu noted: “The Deputy Governor has not been arrested but we are aware of an ongoing plan to arrest him over unfounded lies so that Oshiomhole and his cohorts will have the freedom to rig the Edo North Senatorial district election.”https://e332364ab9191f282bf15695206cd5c7.safeframe.googlesyndication.com/safeframe/1-0-37/html/container.html?n=0

“President Muhammadu Buhari has kicked against rigging of the election in Edo State, promising to congratulate whoever emerges as the winner.

“But Adams Oshiomhole and Osagie Ize-Iyamu (APC candidate) who felt betrayed by the President’s statement decided to use the back door to arrest the Deputy Governor in the name of illegal possession of arms.

“It is a lie from the pit of hell and a heap of rubbish to mention the name of the Deputy Governor in such a mundane practice of democracy”https://e332364ab9191f282bf15695206cd5c7.safeframe.googlesyndication.com/safeframe/1-0-37/html/container.html?n=0

“Comrade Philip Shaibu has been in active politics since Nigeria returned to Democracy in 1999 and has never been linked to the issue of an arms deal. In less than 24 hours to the Edo State Governorship election, is it today that Oshiomhole now wants to organize an arrest?NEWS:  Edo election: INEC provides update, deploys 8 commissioners

“I want to assure that Comrade Philip Shaibu can’t be arrested because the People of Edo State will resist it. Oshiomhole is planning to create unrest in the State on election day by his attempt to use the DSS to arrest the Deputy Governor.https://e332364ab9191f282bf15695206cd5c7.safeframe.googlesyndication.com/safeframe/1-0-37/html/container.html?n=0

“We are calling on President Buhari and the International community to immediately prevail and call Oshiomhole and his thugs to order to avert unrest that may follow their actions.”

Nigeria is the most prosperous black nation in the world’- President Buhari

As Nigeria prepares to celebrate its 60th independence anniversary, President Buhari has described Nigeria as the most prosperous black nation in the world and the largest economy in Africa.

The President said this when he spoke at the unveiling ceremony of the theme and logo for the nation’s 60th independence anniversary in Abuja today September 16.

A statement released by presidential spokesperson, Femi Adesina, quotes President Buhari as saying

“Today, we stand on the threshold of history as we formally begin a series of activities commemorating Nigeria’s Diamond Anniversary. The task history has saddled me with today is to proclaim a theme that will keep us united, help us forge ahead and unveil a logo that will form the critical pillars which our 11-month modest commemorative activities would rest on.

Celebrating sixty years of independence really calls for pomp, but the global COVID-19 pandemic, which has forced all nations in the world to think and act differently, has also foisted on us the imperative of a low-keyed celebration.

Operating within the limitations placed by the COVID-19 pandemic, we created an internet challenge for Nigerians to make a choice from a set of four pre-selected logos that would appropriately define the theme.

Of these four options, Nigerians from all walks of life participated in making a choice and I am happy to let you know that the logo I would be unveiling is a product of choice from the Nigerian people.

The selected option depicts our togetherness, a country of over 200 million people whose natural talent, grit and passion glitter like the precious DIAMOND we are. This, to me, is a special appreciation to our most precious asset – our people. Everywhere you go, Nigerians are sparkling like diamonds in the pack, whether in academia, business, innovation, music, movie, entertainment, fashion and culture.

Furthermore, the neatly encrusted Diamond on the Nigerian Map symbolizes our age of treasure, the worth of the Nigerian people with our sparkle to the admiration of the world. All these properties make us unarguably the most prosperous black nation in the world and Africa’s largest economy. This shall be a befitting tribute to the struggles of our heroes past.”

Nigerian lesbian movie “Ife” dares Censors Board, set for release

Nigerian lesbian movie “Ife” produced by Pamela Adie and directed by Uyaiedu Ikpe-Etim is set for release despite stern warning from Nigerian Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) that the film (which means “love” in Yoruba language violates the country’s strict laws on homosexuality.

But according to a report by BBC, the filmmakers are determined to get the film across to the Nigerian audience. To get around, the report says the filmmakers are planning a surprise online release to catch the regulators off-guard. However, according to BBC in its report, the Censors Board is well aware and diligently monitoring all digital platforms to checkmate the release of the movie.

According to the Censors Board boss, Adebayo Thomas, both the producer and the director, and indeed all involved in the film could be risking jail terms of 14 years sentence for promoting homosexuality in a country where same-sex relationships are forbidden.

BBC in the report says the filmmakers are planning a private screening in Lagos at the end of the month for which they feel they do not need the nod of the regulators to go ahead. It was also reported that the film is being billed for international premiere in Canada in October of this year.

BBC quotes the producer, Adie as saying the film was to show an accurate picture of lesbian and bisexual women in Nigerian movies

If a lesbian woman does appear in a standard Nollywood movie they are often portrayed as being possessed, influenced by bad friends or forced into homosexuality and always needing “saving”, she told the BBC.

“You rarely see stories about LGBT people, especially about queer women that speak to the realities of our lives. “Ife was made to bridge the gap and to get the conversation going in Nigeria.”

“Ife” is a story about two women, played by Uzoamaka Aniunoh and Cindy Amadi falling in love as they spend three days together. They “then have their love tested by the realities of being in a same-sex relationship in a country like Nigeria”, according to the publicity for the film.

“Before now, we have been told one-sided stories. What we are doing with this film is normalising the queer experience, we are normalising the LGBT romance. It will begin to erase that shame that LBQ [lesbian, bisexual and queer] women face,” Adie told the BBC.

The lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) community in Africa is becoming increasingly vocal and visible, thanks to the internet providing a space for films, talk shows and websites.

But that has not stopped filmmakers from getting into trouble with authorities. The head of the NFVCB said there was no space for Ife or other homosexual movies in Nigeria, citing the law.

“There’s a standing law that prohibits homosexuality, either in practice or in a movie or even in a theatre or on stage. If it’s content from Nigeria, it has to be censored,” Mr Thomas told the BBC.

He said that whatever the platform was, “as long as it’s Nigerian content and it’s telling a Nigerian story, then we have a right to it”.

But there is no plan for large-scale screenings of Ife in Nigerian cinemas or selling the DVD, as the producers want to make it available online as pay-on-demand.

But even that will get them into trouble with the regulators.

“If it did not pass through NFVCB and it is released, the filmmakers will be prosecuted according to the law,” Mr Thomas said. As long as it’s Nigerian content, we will pull it down because we have collaborations with Google, YouTube and other key players.”

But that has not deterred the producers and Adie says her team will continue as planned, as they believe they have done nothing wrong and do not plan to seek permission for an online release.

This is not the first time an LGBTQ-themed movie has fallen foul of regulators on the continent.

“Stories of Our Lives”, a collection of five short films based on stories of LGBTQ life in Kenya was banned in 2014 for being “contrary to national norms”.

This was also the fate of Rafiki, Kenya’s first film about a lesbian relationship, which went on to be the East African nation’s first film to premiere at the Cannes film festival and also receive an Oscar nomination.

“Inxeba/The Wound”, a South African film about a relationship between two men in the context of the Xhosa initiation ritual was also banned from mainstream South African cinemas in 2018.

Despite the set-backs, some in the LGBTQ community in Africa say they are gradually gaining confidence and acceptance and link it to the increased visibility in films and literature which are encouraging greater tolerance among younger generations.

FG Gives Update On Reopening Of Universities, Other Tertiary Institutions

The federal government of Nigeria on Monday, 14th September, disclosed that a final decision has not been taken on the reopening of tertiary institutions in the country but the COVID-19 situation is been reviewed.

Minister of State for Education, , who spoke on Monday during the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 briefing in Abuja, said the universities need to get clearance and procedures from the National Universities Commission (NUC) before reopening.

He added that after such clearance, the governing council of each institution will then have to benchmark the guidelines for implementation and put necessary structures and facilities before schools can reopen.

“…But at the tertiary level, that guidance will also be done in collaboration with the National Universities Commission so that it will give clearance that we are satisfied with your performance with regard to the guideline.

“What we are doing is that we are reducing this whole gamut of document into some measurable steps towards reopening. What that means is that governing council of each institution will then review the guideline and benchmark it,” he said.

For the state governments who had been reopening primary and secondary schools in their respective states, the Minister noted that their actions are in compliance with PTF position.

He however added that full COVID-19 procedures must be put in place and strictly adhered to as schools reopen across the country.

Nwajiuba stated this while reacting to a question about some state governments that have already announced full reopening of primary and secondary schools.

He said: “All primary schools up to post-primary schools have the participation of sub-nationals and at that level, they need to check and meet all the requirements before they open.

“You may have heard several states taking steps around reopening, they are all in order. This is what is expected from what the PTF said last week and following the guideline everybody will now begin the processes of reopening.

“However, they must be guided because in every state we have quality assurance officers that are reporting to the Federal Ministry of Education and we will not hesitate to shut down any place that is not in compliance with guidelines.”

HUH! Did You Know Ethiopia Just Entered 2013 While The Rest of The World is in 2020?

An Ethiopian year is comprised of 13 months, and is seven years behind the Gregorian calendar.

Truth is, Ethiopians celebrated the new millennium on September 11, 2007; this is because the Ethiopians continued with the same calendar that the Roman church amended in 525 AD unlike the rest of the world.

Should we tell them about 2020 or should we let them find out themselves?

US imposes visa ban on election riggers in Nigeria

The U.S. Department of State in a statement on Monday, September 14, 2020 said the unnamed individuals are being sanctioned for their untoward actions surrounding the elections which took place in November 2019.

The department’s spokesperson, Morgan Ortagus , said the restriction also affects those who behaved inappropriately in the run up to the governorship elections in Edo and Ondo scheduled for September and October 2020, respectively
“These individuals have so far operated with impunity at the expense of the Nigerian people and have undermined democratic principles,”Ortagus said.

Similar travel restrictions were imposed by the U.S. Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo ,after Nigeria’s general electionsin February and March 2019.
The Department of State noted that the action specifically targets individuals and not Nigerians in general, noting that it’s an expression of the U.S. government’s commitment to end corruption and strengthen democracy, accountability, and respect for human rights.

“We condemn the acts of violence, intimidation, or corruption that harmed Nigerians and undermined the democratic process,”the statement read.
