Group threatens nationwide protest over APC national convention

A pressure group, the Concerned APC Members, has vowed to embark on nationwide protest on Monday if the Caretaker/Extra-Ordinary National Convention Planning Committee (CENCPC) of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) fails to roll out time table for the December National Convention of the party.

The group, on October 12, issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Caretaker Committee to announce time table for the convention in line with directive of the 25th June emergency National Executive Committee meeting.

But Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the party, Yekini Nabena, dismissed the threat of the group, accusing it of being insincere despite efforts by the party leadership to listen to their complaints.

But leader of the group, Alhaji Abdullahi Dauda, told The Nation the ultimatum was extended by one week following assurances by Nabena the time table was ready.

The Nation reports the 25th June emergency NEC meeting inaugurated the Governor Mai Mala Buni led Caretaker Committee with a mandate to reconcile all aggrieved members and conduct a national convention for emergence of a new National Working Committee (NEC) to replace the Adams Oshiomole led dissolved Committee.

Four months into the tenure of the Caretaker Committee, the Concerned APC group accused the CENCPC of scheming for tenure elongation following its refusal to announce a time table for the convention.

The group then imposed a 14-day ultimatum on the party leadership on 12th October which lapsed on Monday, the 26th of October.

According to Dauda, a chieftain of the party from Bauchi, “it is true we gave 14 days ultimatum and at its expiration the leadership of the party through the Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Yekini Nabena in a newspaper report (The Nation) on the 27th October apologised and said that the time table for the conduct of the national convention was ready.

“As loyal party members, based on the words of the Deputy National Publicity Secretary, we agreed to give the party leadership one week to enable us study the time table. We gave this extension because we have confidence in the integrity of the party leadership.

“But if by the end of the one week extension, which is Monday 3rd of November, we shall have no alternative than to go on our protest by Monday.

“We have moblised our people across the country. We have been patriotic enough by extending the ultimatum. The Caretaker Committee should be held responsible for the protest.”

When told the Forum of APC state chairmen recently passed a vote on confidence on the Committee with a promise to extend the 6 months tenure of the Buni led Committee, Dauda said: “These chairmen have to such powers. It was President Muhammadu Buhari through the NEC that appointed the Caretaker Committee and that is the only organ that can say otherwise.”

Reacting to Monday’s protest threat, Nabena denied statin the time table was ready, insisting that he never had such discussion with anybody.

“This group is not sincere. I never told anybody of any time table, all I said was that any aggrieved member should come forward with their grievances. The Governor Mai Mala Buni led Caretaker Committee in keeping with its mandate is prepared to attend to any aggrieved members.

“This people refused to show up. How can’t we be dealing with faceless people? Let them come to the party secretariat and we shall discuss with them. We cannot be discussing party matters and be issuing ultimatum on the pages of newspapers.”

We can’t afford another round of COVID-19 lockdown – Buhari warns Nigerians

President Muhammadu Buhari has warned that Nigeria’s economy is too fragile to bear another round of coronavirus lockdown.

The President stated this in his message to Muslims in Nigeria as they join others all over the world to mark the Eid-el-Maulud.

Buhari urged all citizens to use the occasion to reflect on the virtues of the Holy Prophet by showing love and understanding for fellow citizens while exhibiting patience, honesty, sincerity, kindness and generosity in all their undertakings.

In a message to Muslims commemorating the birthday of Prophet Mohammed (SAW) which is being marked as public holiday, the President urged all citizens, and the youth in particular, to shun all negative tendencies as manifested in the recent hijacking of peaceful protests to loot and destroy public and private property.

He also reiterated his earlier promise to bring police officers responsible for misconduct as well as the looters to justice.

On the COVID-19 pandemic, President Buhari, while noting that the country has so far managed the problem successfully by keeping the numbers as low as possible, however, cautioned that Nigerians must not stretch their luck too far.

“Looking at the trends in the other countries, we must do all we can to avert the second wave of the pandemic. We must make sure that our cases, which have gone down, do not rise again. Our economy is too fragile to bear another round of lockdown,” he said.

The President, therefore, advised all citizens to continue to observe the COVID-19 protocols of social distancing, wearing of face masks and washing of hands.

Cross River Governor, Ayade orders police to carry out house-to-house search for looted properties

Governor Ben Ayade of Cross River, stunned by the wild looting of government and private assets by angry residents, has ordered a house-to-house search to retrieve the loot.

He also charged security agencies to take legitimate actions to halt the spate of arson and carnage witnessed in some parts of Calabar.

NewsWireNGR reported the looting and destruction of properties across Calabar Saturday, some houses owned by prominent “Crosivarians” set ablaze by the hoodlums.
The governor gave the police the tasks in a release issued on Sunday in Calabar by, Mr Christian Ita, Special Adviser, Media and Publicity.

According to Ita, Ayade asked the police to arrest anyone involved in the looting of both public and private property in the state.

The governor who said he understood the pain of the people, noted that there was need to protect the collective commonwealth of the people.

He said the commonwealth was threatened by some persons who are desperately trying to discredit the peaceful disposition of the citizens of Cross River.

Ayade urged the security agencies to take legitimate actions to ensure that calm returned to the state, especially as the government was already working towards ensuring the demands of those who genuinely participated in the #EndSARS march are met.

The governor also called on the citizens to rise up and defend their land from criminal elements bent on destroying the image of the state

LLinda Ikeji To Assist Female Entrepreneurs Whose Stores Were Looted

Nigerian famous blogger, Linda Ikeji has promised to offer help to female entrepreneurs whose businesses were looted during the crisis that followed the End SARS protests in Lagos state, IgbereTV reports.

The Linda Ikeji Media CEO called on small business owners affected by the lootings to send a mail with photos and videos of their looted stores and an estimate of the value of what was lost.

She promised to help some small business owners to rebuild.

Linda wrote on her official Instagram page:

“The events of the last few days has left me really sad and horrified. But Nigeria is our country, It’s the only home we have, so we have to make it work. We all have to do our parts.

And here’s my part! You’ll know I’m big on female entrepreneurship and women being financially independent, so it breaks my heart to see women who have strived for years to stay afloat lose their businesses overnight. Not fair! So If you’re a female entrepreneur residing in Lagos and your business was destroyed or looted and you need help to get back on your feet, pls send me an email lindaikeji1980@gmail.com.

I’m focusing on women with small scale businesses who lost their sources of livelihood. I’d like to help some of you get back on your feet and see if I can get some of my rich friends to also help. Covid-19 already made life difficult for some of us, the events of the last few days will make life unbearable and we can’t just sit back and do nothing.

I’d like to help some of you restart your businesses so if you were affected, send me an email ASAP with proof of what was destroyed (videos and photos) and also value of what you lost so we have an idea of how much to help with.

I have already set up a team to crosscheck all claims as we receive your emails. Once we confirm you’re truly a victim, I will do what I can and get others to also help. We are all in this together. We have to be our brothers keepers.

Anybody who wants to help can also contact me. We will all be helping these business owners directly after we compile a verified list. Nobody is collecting money on behalf of anybody.

Nigeria will not fail. God bless everyone

P.S: when all these dies down and it’s safe to move around, I and a few other female entrepreneurs will pay visits to women who lost their businesses.. and give hugs…among other things!. #womensupportingwomen #unitedwestand”

End SARS: Lawan announces National Assembly plan

Senate President, Ahmad Lawan has assured that the National Assembly will get justice for victims of police brutality.

Lawan said the legislature will collaborate with the executive to ensure that rights abuses by personnel of the disbanded Police Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) are probed.

The lawmaker, in a statement, noted that the government has shown commitment to implement the five-point demands of the End SARS protesters.

He, however, condemned the arson, violence and looting in several parts of the country.

“As we seek a path out of this regrettable crisis, my heart goes out to the victims of the reprehensible violence and criminality witnessed in the last few days in many parts of the country.

“Now that the mindless carnage has distorted the purpose of the protests, I urge the youths to join hands with the authorities in bringing an urgent cessation to the violence.

“I call on our patriotic youths to leave the streets as Government has heard their voices and is addressing their grievances. This is also necessary to avoid unwittingly continuing to provide covers for the criminals and fifth columnists in our midst.

“As regards those criminal elements unleashing terror on our cities under the guise of the protest, I urge the security agencies to forthwith but with utmost restraint, restore law and order across the country and bring the criminals to justice.”

Lawan sent condolences to the families of fallen law enforcement agents and civilians.

He called for a thorough investigation of criminal acts witnessed in the past two weeks.

After #EndSARS, Nigerian Youth Begin New Campaign on Social Media

Nigerian youths might not be backing down on their protest and several demands from the government anytime soon, especially after the the huge backings they gave to the #EndSARS movement.

The youths have since the unfortunate killing of several people in Lagos State continue to mourn them, but might have taken a new course after the massacre.

They have taken over the social media space with a new campaign on asking questions to know the person or persons who issued an order to the men referred to as men of the Nigerian army who shot live bullets at unarmed protesters.

Questions are being asked about how and why the men said to be Nigerian soldiers would leave their barracks and decide to shoot innocent and unarmed protesters. This, in a new twist of events has become a new course for the Nigerian youth who want to know who gave such others.

Some of the Nigerian youth wrote on Twitter;

“E L OO N A M #EndSars@Elozonam1;

Who ordered the shooting of peaceful protesters at Lekki on the 20th of October 2020???”

“David Hundeyin@DavidHundeyin;

Who ordered the shooting of peaceful protesters at Lekki on the 20th of October, 2020??? #EndSARS”

“chimdindu obiaku@DinduObiaku,

WHO ORDERED THE SHOOTING OF PEACEFUL PROTESTERS AT LEKKI ON THE 20TH OF OCTOBER, 2020???”

The Lagos State governor on the other hand had earlier stated that the order for the events leading to the shoot came from quarters beyond the state’s immediate control. Many Nigerians have however wondered who has the constitutional power to order the Nigerian army, if the men responsible for the shooting were truly men of the Nigerian army.

Enough Is Enough’ – IGP Orders AIGs, CPs, PMF, CTU, SPU Commanders To Reclaim Public Space

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu has ordered the immediate mobilization of all police organizational assets and resources to put an end to the gross violence, killing, theft and destruction of public and private property, and to regain public space from criminal elements masquerading in some parts of the country as demonstrators.

Today , October 24 , 2020, the IGP issued the order to all Assistant Inspectors General of Police (AIGs), Police Commissioners (CPs), Heads of Tactical Units of Police, Squadron and Base Commanders in charge of Zonal/State/FCT Commands, Police Mobile Force, Counter Terrorism Unit and Special Protection Unit.

In addition, in the different states, CPs/ Heads of Police Formations have also been tasked with mobilizing their men and operating in tandem with the Command CPs in the areas where they live, dominating the public space and maintaining peace and stability in the affected areas.

The IGP states that all acts of lawlessness, disturbance of public peace and order and gratuitous violence that have resulted in indiscriminate robbery of shops , malls and warehouses, property damage and loss of life in certain parts of the country has become too much and needed to stop.

He also ordered strategic police managers to direct and organize the operation personally and use all legal means to avoid the further descent into lawlessness and brigandage.

Instead of panicking, the IGP requires law-abiding citizens to join forces with the police and other law enforcement community members to protect their neighborhoods from the criminal elements.

It also calls for citizens’ awareness and cooperation to ensure that action is aimed at ensuring public order, protection and public safety in our communities.

Nevertheless, the IGP cautions troublemakers not to challenge the nation’s collective will by coming out to trigger any more breakdown of law and order

#EndSARS: Nnamdi Kanu, IPOB Have Unleashed War On The Yoruba Nation — CPYY

View pictures in App save up to 80% data.

The Council of Patriotic Yoruba Youth (CPYY) has blamed Nnamdi Kanu and his proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) for the attack on innocent #EndSARS protesters and the arson that followed in Lagos State. In a statement signed by its President, Fagbemi Olanrewaju, on Friday, the CPYY said Kanu had declared war on the Yoruba nation and effectively carried out his threat.

Recall that peaceful #EndSARS protesters were shot by unknown gunmen at Lekki tollgate on Tuesday while the Oba of Lagos palace, TVC headquarters, The Nation Newspaper and others were attacked by hoodlums the following day. And according to CPYY, this was a well-thought-out plot by Kanu to destroy the economic advantage of the Yoruba nation and make them subservient to the Igbo’s whose property and businesses were left intact.

The group said targetting Yoruba businesses “marks a despicable low even for a scoundrel like Nnamdi Kanu, whose trademark as a coward that abandoned his so-called struggle and fled abroad to instigate attacks from his bolthole”. It added that it is “most irresponsible to hijack the #EndSARS protests, which objectives are noble, and deploy the same as a vehicle for pursuing a failed separatist agenda”. The group, however, assured that the Yoruba nation will continue to “live by and display the high sense of civility for which our respected culture is known and will never descent to IPOB’s miserable depth”. It urged the Federal Government to investigate the targeted arsons and shooting of #EndSARS protesters at Lekki tollgate.

Gunmen Kill 20 In Fresh Attack On Zamfara Village

At least 20 persons have been killed by gunmen suspected to be bandits in Tungar Kwana village, Talata Mafara Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
The incident was confirmed by Amnesty International in a Tweet. The Human Rights group said the village has been deserted since the attack.

Residents however revealed that the armed men arrived in the community on motorbikes after blocking the entry and exit points into the community.

One of the residents said the attack, which was carried out on Tuesday, was a well planned and coordinated attack.

The gunmen after attacking the village carted away livestock and escaped to the forest. The resident alleged that the attack was in retaliation for the massive ongoing onslaught by Nigerian security forces against the armed bandits in their forest enclave.

Emir of Talata Mafara, Bello Muhammed, on Wednesday morning led the funeral prayer for the victims of the attack.

End SARS: Please stop killing us – Ogun police beg protesters

The Ogun State Police Command has appealed to End SARS protesters in the state to stop killing and maiming policemen.

The police also begged the irate youths to stop attacking police stations all in the name of expressing their grievances.

The Ogun police spokesman, Abimbola Oyeyemi, made this plea Wednesday, on behalf of the State Commissioner of Police, Edward Ajogun.

According to Oyeyemi, the hitherto peaceful protest embarked upon by youths across Ogun has taken a dangerous and violent dimension, saying “some people with ulterior motives are now using the opportunity to commit all sorts of heinous crimes.”

Oyeyemi also confirmed a report, when he said, “Early this morning, the protesters went to Atan-Ota and set the Police station there ablaze; and subsequently murdered the D.C.O, DSP Augustine Ogbeche in cold blood. A civilian also died in the process while some arms were carted away.”

He said they also inflicted serious injuries on the DPO, SP Sikiru Olugbenga, whose whereabouts, he said, is yet unknown.

Oyeyemi confirmed further that some group of boys attacked Obada-oko divisional headquarters in Abeokuta and vandalized it.

“In view of this, the Commissioner of Police Ogun State Command is appealing to the youths to eschew violence and embrace peace as the violence will do no one good.

“He is equally appealing to traditional institutions, parents and other critical stakeholders to prevail on the youths to stop this carnage and give the government a chance to address the situation,”.

Oyeyemi reminded the youths that since the commencement of the protests, the police in Ogun have been nice and civil to them, even when some of the officers were injured and stations damaged; saying, “We even went ahead and released all the 36 suspects we arrested.”

Pleading for understanding, the PPRO said, “if in the course of handling the protests anybody feels offended we plead for understanding and not retaliatory measures including killing and maiming policemen or burning and damaging of police stations.”

He assured that the command will ensure that justice is served to any aggrieved person.

“Please and please, let us continue to embrace peace rather than violence. The Command sincerely appeals to the youths. Parents and guardians are also enjoined to help rein in their children and wards.”

Shortly after the governor arrived at the scene, the Osun State Coordinator of the #RevolutionNow Movement, Olawale Bakare, had demanded an apology from him for refusing to engage the protesters after nine days of protest.

Bakare also demanded immediate arrest and prosecution of a leader of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, identified as Asiri Eniba.

Eniba was accused of sending thugs to attack the protesters.

While responding to the demands, Oyetola, after an apology to the protesters for failing to address them since the protest started, promised to make enquiry from the Commissioner of Police to ascertain the involvement of the NURTW boss in the alleged attack.

He also denied sending thugs to attack the protesters and promised to pay the hospital bills of all those injured during the protest.

End SARS: It’s no longer peaceful, we’ll not fold our hands – FG issues strong warning to protestersWarritatafoOct 18, 2020Re

The Federal Government has said that the ongoing nationwide protest is no longer peaceful, warning that it will not fold its hands and allow the country to be thrown into anarchy.

This is following the violence that has trailed the #EndSARS protests in some parts of the country, specifically the attack on Governor Gboyega Oyetola of Osun State on Saturday.

Lai Mohammed, the minister of Information and Culture, gave the warning on Saturday when he featured on a late night Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) news programme, “Weekend File”.

He said the assassination attempt on Oyetola was a clear confirmation that the protests had been hijacked by hoodlums and people with ulterior agenda.

According to Mohammed, the original conveners of the #EndSARS protests might have meant well, but are no longer in control of the movement.

“Peaceful protest is an integral part of democracy and that is why the Federal Government in the last 11 days has treated the protesters in a very civilised manner,” Mohammed said.

“But, if you look at what happened to the governor of Osun state, it has gone completely beyond peaceful protest against excesses and abuse of power by the police.

“There is no where in the world where a government will folds its arms and allow the country to descend into anarchy.

“We are no longer dealing with #EndSARS but a volatile situation that can lead to anarchy if government does not take some very firm steps to protect the lives and livelihood of innocent Nigerians,” he said.

Mohammed said a protest where protesters are now blocking the roads and highway, cannot be said to be peaceful because workers are finding it difficult to get to their offices and back home while many Nigerians are stranded on the roads.

“We have nothing against peaceful protest but there are civilised ways of doing so,” he said.

“This is by going to a venue where you are not going to disturb other Nigerians because where your own right stops, other persons’ right begins,” he said.

Against the backdrop of continued EndSARS protests across the country, the Nigerian Army has said it is ready to fully support the civil authority in whatever capacity to maintain law and order.

Army Headquarters also stated that troops are ready to deal with any untoward situation decisively.

The Army directed all it’s officers and soldiers, never to be distracted by those it called ‘anti-democratic forces and agents of disunity’.

This declaration was contained in a statement signed late last night by Col Sagir Musa, Acting Director, Army Public Relations, titled ‘Nigerian Army Remains Resolute to the Peace and Stability of the Nation’.

It reads, “The Nigerian Army (NA) wishes to reassure law-abiding citizens that it is highly committed to the sustenance of peace, security and defence of democracy in Nigeria.

“As a responsible and law-abiding organisation, the Nigerian Army reaffirms its unalloyed loyalty and commitment to the President, Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria President Muhammadu Buhari and the Constitution of the Country.

“The NA hereby warns all subversive elements and trouble makers to desist from such acts as it remains highly committed to defend the country and her democracy at all cost.

“The NA is ready to fully support the civil authority in whatever capacity to maintain law and order and deal with any situation decisively.

“All officers and men are directed never to be distracted by anti-democratic forces and agents of disunity.”

Seyi Makinde, Oyo governor, loses mum aged 81LegitOct 15, 2020Read

  • Mrs Abigail Makinde, a mother to Oyo state governor, is dead
  • Seyi Makinde’s mum reportedly died on Thursday morning October 15 aged 81
  • No official statement has been issued about the demise of the octogenarian
Seyi Makinde, governor of Oyo, has lost his mother to the cold hands of death, a report from Tribune and OyoInsight , a top local newspaper from the state, claims.
Although no official statement has been issued as a check on the governor’s social media pages bears no related pronouncement, Legit.ng gathers that Makinde’s mum, Mrs Abigail Makinde, died on Thursday, October 15.
The Oyo governor’s mother died at the age of 81 years, with her demise said to have plunged the entire Makinde’s household into mourning.

It would be recalled that on July 11, 2019, Governor Makinde celebrated his mum when she became an octogenarian.

It was there, as this publication gathers, the governor announced that his mum is someone whose bluntness and straightforward character he is imbibed.

In his words:

“Actually, while growing up, when I saw other kids being given Christmas presents and I went to my mother to request for mine, she would tell me if I did not receive such presents yesterday, definitely I didn’t deserve them today. So, she is blunt to a fault.”She says things the way they are and I think I took a little bit of that. We planned big for this birthday, but mama did not let us have it the way we have planned for it.”When I asked her why, she replied that when my father turned 75, we had a big birthday event for him and he died one year after. So, I think Mama is not ready to die.”

Nigeria may shut down internet as #EndSARS protests continue

With Nigerians not backing down on protests for the reform of the police force and total disbandment of the Special Anti- Robbery Squad(SARS), there are speculations that the government might shut down the internet.

Six days ago, a video of a fatal police shooting of a Nigerian man, sparked outrage and reignited a public call for the total dissolution of the controversial police unit in the country.

The video caused large numbers of Nigerians including celebrities, politicians, and activists calling for justice using hashtags such as #WarOnSars, #EndSars, and #SarsAlert #SARSMUSTEND.

With celebrities adding their voice to the #EndSARS campaign, it jumped to the top of global trend on Twitter and drew international support from celebrities and soccer stars like Kanye West, Trey Songs, Mesut Ozil and Marcus Rashford.

Nigeria’s superstars, Wizkid and Falz who are also part of this generation of protesters, have been physically present in London and Abuja protests.

The protests against the police have largely been organized on social media, fuelled by citizens sharing their experiences of police abuses and videos of brutal incidents, including the beating of civilians and the firing of live ammunition at protesters.

The campaign moved from social media to the streets of Nigeria, with protesters demanding an end to the rogue police unit and a wholesome police reform.

However, the protesters are not relenting despite the dissolution of the notorious police squad but have continued to protest noting the government’s ineffectual promises of police reforms and investigations in the past.

The campaigners have also been able to organise funds to cater to their welfares during protest using digital payment platforms.

But there are now speculations that the Nigerian government may to shut the protesters up by shutting down the internet since surreptitious move to divide the protesters have failed.

Active protesters on and off social media have said unknown numbers have been calling to threaten them to back off.

Moreover, Feminist Coalition, a pro-#EndSARS women group, said its bank account has been deactivated.

“For demanding an end to police brutality we are now under attack,” the group said on Twitter on Tuesday.

Nigerians are however speculating that the government in order to mute the campaign may clampdown on social media like its counterparts in other African countries have done in the past.

For instance, Chad shut down the internet in early 2018 despite the international media campaigns against the deliberate clamp down on free speech in the landlocked African country.

“Chad is among the worst states in the world regarding respect of digital rights,” Internet Without Borders said in December 2018.

But Chad is not the only African country where the government’s censorship of digital rights was used to stifle freedom of speech.

Between 2016 and 2018, the authorities in South Sudan, Cameroon, Ethiopia, and Somalia also shut down the internet in their respective countries.

While Zimbabwe, Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo have forced internet shutdown in 2019, Tanzania, Uganda, and a host of North African countries have stringent subsisting rules for the use of social media and digital publishing.

Nigeria almost moved in that direction in 2019 as law that sought to punish individuals behind certain social media posts which was proposed to the Nigerian Senate in 2017 passed first reading.

Massive media backlash prevented lawmakers from passing the bill into law.

Campaigners also argued that the #EndSARS was missing on trend table on Twitter despite thousands of people tweeting the hashtag.

Some of them said the government may have tampered with the hashtag. That belief led to the birth of #SARSMustEnd.

Paradigm Initiatives media and program manager Adegoke Adeboye said it is not “impossible” for the Nigerian Government to shut down the internet but hoped it will not get to that point.

“The government’s response to the protest has been double-faced, “ Adegoke said.

“While saying all the nice things openly, it is secretly attacking private businesses that has lent their platforms to support the protest.”

He said the clampdown on Flutterwave might be the first step to mute the active participation of citizens in the protest.

“We all know the role that the Internet is playing in the protest and we can already imagine that someone has proposed this to the government,” Adegoke said.

Adegoke further stated that it is better Nigerians are prepared than to be caught unawares.

“In April last year, PIN developed some guidelines to help citizens stay online should the government shut down the internet.”

“The guides are still relevant and we are also working with some of our partners to specifically help Nigerians stay online should the government shut down the internet. The digital rights community are therefore envisaging this already
