8 Implications Of Kogi/Bayesa Elections In Nigeria

By magnus – 2019-11-19 12:17:11 – [ News ]

Nigeria, a country endowed by God, would have become one of the best countries in the world. But since her independence, her leadership has been her Nightmare.

In 1999, over 20years ago- Nigeria returned fully back to democracy, but still, the leaders have been terrible.

Democracy, where the will of the people should be the hallmark has been destroyed by power mongers, so Nigeria democracy can be termed as autocracy.

Looking back, we saw the inglorious election of Morris Iwu, but we develop gradually during the time of Professor Attahiru Jega, because we knew our vote counted then. But the recent INEC under Mahmoud has conducted elections that are taking us backwards.

Two days ago, the election conducted in Kogi and Bayelsa, has raised eyebrows, because of the impunity, rigging, killings, security agencies compromise etc.

Listed below are 8 implications on Nigerians:

  1. In the future elections, there will be voter apathy.

because voting is like wasting our time and risking our lives, because, at the End, Power-that-be determines the Winners, people won’t come out to vote again

  1. Politicians will more take election as war because they will always want to march fire for fire..forget about the ceremonial peace accord
  2. Thuggery will be more lucrative

Going by the recent elections, I wonder how these thugs and hoodlums that are used are empowered with arms and ammunition, vehicles, and I know they will smile to Bank

  1. Many people become hopeless in Nigeria:

It’s a fact that, with this show of shame, people become hopeless about having good leaders who can transform our country

  1. Good people will run away from politics:

Yes, I have seen many people who don’t want to talk on politics, because it’s traumatic to them

  1. Governors won’t bother to perform to be reelected:

This is true because if I can’t talk on anywhere I can talk on Kogi, it is a place I do visit. I almost cry whenever I visit, but at the end, the Governor won with wide margins..you know more!!!

  1. Nigerians won’t believe on anyone’s Integrity anymore:

I know many people who still think they are dreaming, because they believe so much in Buhari’s integrity, and wonder what is happening in his era?

  1. More security challenges:

Its another implication because in all these elections, the thousands of hoodlums that were empowered won’t want to be idle, so they start arm robbery or kidnapping.

The order came hours after Lula’s lawyers requested the immediate release of the 74-year-old leftist icon, who has been serving a nearly nine-year sentence for corruption and money laundering.

Late Thursday, the Supreme Court overturned a rule requiring convicted criminals to go to jail after losing their first appeal.

Appeal Court gives judgement in suit challenging Gov Ayade’s election

By Magnus – 2019-11-07 22:02:02 – [ News ]

The Court of Appeal Sitting in Calabar, on Thursday, affirmed Governor Ben Ayade of Cross River State as the winner of the state Governorship election.

The appellate court upheld the judgement of the election tribunal which had earlier affirmed Gov Ayade, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP as the winner of the election.

The five-man panel of judges in a unanimous decision dismissed the petition of the factional candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC) and former Minister for Niger Delta, Usani Usani, and upheld the judgment of the lower tribunal, which had ruled that Usani’s petition lacked merit.

The Court described the petition as a gross abuse of court processes, academic, hypothetical and frivolous.

Reacting, the Governor in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Christian Ita said the victory was an affirmation of the mandate overwhelmingly given to him by the people of Cross River State.

He dedicated the victory to God and the people of the state.

Ayade also extended an olive branch to his opponents in other political parties to join hands with him in moving the state forward.

UN Assembly Condemns US Embargo On CubaBy Mod – 2019-11-07 22:02:02 – [ News ]The UN General Assembly condemned the nearly 60-year-old US embargo on Cuba Thursday for the 28th year in a row, calling for an end to it by a vote of 187 to three.Only Israel and Brazil voted with the US against the resolution. Two other US allies — Ukraine and Colombia — abstained.First imposed on October 19, 1960, in response to Havana’s nationalization of US-owned oil refineries, and extended in 1962, the embargo is an enduring legacy of the Cold War hostilities between the two countries. It was denounced as “anachronistic” and “inhumane” during two days of debate by the General Assembly. In 2016, the US abstained for the first time in the annual UN vote amid a historic US rapprochement with Cuba under former President Barack Obama. But diplomatic relations between the two countries have turned cold since Donald Trump’s arrival in the White House.Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez charged there has been “an escalation in aggression against Cuba” under Trump, whose government, he said, “does not hide its intention to economically asphyxiate Cuba and increase the damage, shortages, and suffering of its people.”Havana claims the embargo has caused $138 billion in damage to the island’s economy, in today’s dollars. The US ambassador to the United Nations, Kelly Craft, blamed the Cuban regime, accusing it of abuses against its own people, and of sowing regional instability.Brazil, now led by the ultra-conservative Jair Bolsonaro, voted for the first time with the United States. Last year, only Israel joined the US in voting against the resolution.

Niger Delta Development Commission
A group, the Niger Delta Transparency Monitoring Group, on Thursday, warned contractors not to deal with the interim management team of the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, for any reason.

The group, in a statement by its President, Justice October Fred, said that with the position of the Senate, the interim management team was an illegal creation that should be avoided.

Fred said: “The senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has already declared that the interim management committee is illegal. On the same day, the senate had said that having confirmed the appointment of the new board, they should take over immediately.

“We do not know why the new board has not taken over yet. But we are warning contractors, even as we urge governors to avoid the interim management team and not give them legitimacy by receiving them as that would amount to recognising and promoting lawlessness.”

Fred, however, declared the group’s intention to monitor and expose the activities of the interim management team up to the day they will vacate office. He also said even when the new team comes up, they will monitor their activities from day one, with a view to exposing them if they misbehaved with the commission’s funds.

He said the time had come for everybody to be held accountable, considering the negative reports on the handling of NDDC funds over the years.

Akpabio had suggested that the interim team be allowed to stay in office for the next two months, to enable them see to the take off of the forensic audit.

Mr. Anietie Ekong, media assistant to the minister, could not be reached as at the time of filing this report.

Shocking! Church Worker Nabbed For Taking Girlfriends’ Nude Pictures And Blackmailing Them

By Mod – 2019-11-04 09:48:09 – [ News]

Suspect, Victor Duru

According to a report by Punch Metro, a church protocol officer, Victor Duru, 23, has been arrested by the police for allegedly luring his female church members to hotels and taking their nude pictures, which he used to blackmail them into giving him money.

Duru, who is a Madonna University dropout, was said to have blackmailed not only his girlfriends in the church, but also other girls, who were not members of the church, before he was apprehended by the police in Surulere, Lagos State, last Thursday.

One of his girlfriends, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Duru took her nude pictures and those of another of his girlfriends at a hotel in Ijeshatedo at gunpoint.

She added that she had to call the Rapid Response Squad headquarters to report her experience.

It was learnt that Duru, who is based in Oregun, Ikeja, was investigated and discovered to have been using the nude pictures of the victim to blackmail her into giving him money.

He was also alleged to be keeping the nude pictures of other girls, whom he lodged in hotels and his apartment in Ijeshatedo.

A source added that the suspect obtained the nude pictures of the victims at gunpoint with the assistance of an accomplice.

It was gathered that there was a growing suspicion that Duru also laced the drink of another girl with a sleeping drug as the photographs obtained from one of his mobile phones revealed.

Duru, in his confessional statement, stated, “The victim, who reported me was my girlfriend. We are members of the same church. We have been dating for almost two years. We were having breakup issues.

“So, I invited her to a hotel in Ijeshatedo. I excused myself and invited my friend, Frank Obinna, to meet me in the hotel. Obinna and I had planned this together.

“The gun was a toy gun. Obinna entered the hotel room and held the lady at gunpoint. I told her to cooperate and strip naked for Obinna to take her pictures. We took seven different nude shots of her with my phone. I discharged her that day. That was in September.

“By early October, I called her to give me N80,000 or I would post the nude photographs on the Internet. She was only able to offer me N10,000, which she transferred into my brother’s account.

“Last week, Obinna called her again and requested N40,000. She promised to send something. She was a wonderful girl, who had been assisting me before the problem started. On many occasions, she had assisted me financially.”

It was learnt that Duru attempted to escape from custody in handcuffs, while the police were trying to arrest his accomplice, Obinna, in Ijeshatedo.

According to the victim’s statement, she thought Duru’s friend was a waiter when he entered the hotel room.

She said, “He brought out his phone and I asked my boyfriend what was going on, but he slapped me and told me to remove the blanket covering my body.

“I refused. He yanked it off my body and told me to cooperate. I refused again. He asked his friend for the gun, threatening that if I didn’t cooperate, they would waste me.

“His friend took several shots of my nudity. Both of them abandoned me in the hotel room afterwards.

“I asked him almost a week after what he wanted to do with my pictures and he told me that was the beginning.

“The following Saturday, he threatened to post the pictures on the Internet unless I paid N80,000 in order to delete them. I paid N10,000 with a promise to pay the balance later.

“After a week, his friend called and offered me another option of paying him N40,000 and a night out with him. I refused. He threatened that I would hear from them very soon.”

The source noted that some of the ladies, whose nude pictures were found on Duru’s mobile phones, when contacted by the police to come forward as prosecution witnesses, declined.

The suspect, along with some of the exhibits recovered

Be sacrificial, not greedy leaders, Cleric tells Nigerian politicians

By Magnus- 2019-10-31 20:32:04 – [ News ]

By Ebunoluwa Sessou

Senior Pastor, Grace Family International Church, GFIC, Reverend Yinka Ojo, has called on Nigerian politicians to see themselves as sacrificial leaders who would leave a legacy for others to follow as well as become good leaders to the youths and Nigerians both home and abroad.

He said this on Tuesday in a press conference heralding the church 2019 Annual Convention which starts today Thursday, October 31 and closes Saturday, November 2, in Lagos.

While calling on Nigerian politicians to see themselves as sacrificial and not greedy leaders who amass wealth for themselves, Reverend Ojo, lamented that various challenges the country is passing presently were as a result of what greedy politicians occupying positions of authority have done for selfish gains.

According to him, “Nigeria as a country needs sacrificial leaders who are ready to forfeit their salaries and other allowances to cater for the needy in the society.

“Nigerians politicians should know that no country can develop without sacrificing things that would bring about positive change.

“Politicians and leaders in Nigeria should emulate the President of the United States of America, Donald Trump who has not collected salaries since he assumed the position as president. Rather, he gave a standing instruction that his salaries should be given to the needy, pensioners and people who are in need.

“There is a failure of values in the political setting of Nigeria which needs to be addressed. Many children are raising themselves on the streets and these are the people who become politicians and leaders of tomorrow”, he said.

Speaking on the theme, “Like a Rushing Mighty Wind”, the Senior Pastor explained that, the wind of change is imminent in the country as God would separate bad people from the good ones in the country.

According to him, the theme of the convention was carefully chosen to address some of the challenges raging the country including insecurity, kidnapping, ritualism, killings, among others and these are seriously negating growth and development the country is supposed to be experiencing.

“We are living in very challenging times but nonetheless, with our God, all things are possible. And that is the reason we are calling on people because to witness the event starting from the conference, marriages seminar as well as the singles seminar.

“This is a time for the wind to blow in the country. We trust God to bring people who had gone astray and remould to His pattern. This is another day of the Pentecost. We will have a new revival.

“Emphasis is placed on the church and that is why it is important to live according to the precept of God. If there is negative outrage from the church, it poses a stronger impact on the people. And the situation will be worse than when a politician commits a crime.

“The church holds such a position and she needs to get it right and the power to get it right is the power of the Holy Spirit.

“It is an event planned for us to be together to pray and encourage ourselves thereby developing individuals to become responsible and positive people in the country. It is a time that promises upliftment for everyone. We are using this forum to invite all and sundry to come and witness these four days of steering our hopes alive”, he said.

APC lawmaker accuses Segalink of libel, demands N3bn damages

By Magnus – 2019-10-31 20:32:05 – [ News ]

Activist and convener of EndSARS movement Segun Awosanya has been accused of making defamatory statements against a member of Nigeria’s House of Representatives.

Wole Olanipekun Chambers, lawyers to Abdulmumin Jubrin, an All Progressive Congress representing Kiru/Bebeji Federal Constituency in Kano State, said Awosanya made libellous and defamatory publications against their clients on twitter.

On October 17, Segalink in a tweet thread alleged that Jubrin has “17 bank accounts local and foreign despite signing a CCB form that he had no foreign account.”

“I showed the world documents and modus of siphoning money from MDAs after appropriation, till date @officialEFCC is mute,” Segalink tweeted.

“Is section 7(1) impotent against his likes? Is this not an advanced form of yahoo right within the core of public office?

“So with all the budget and their new building their boss is using to strengthen institution, they are powerless against real economic and financial crimes?” he added.

However, Wole Olanipekun Chambers denied such of its client. It said Jubrin has “unequivocally and emphatically denied the allegations contained in your tweets as untrue, unfounded, unwarranted representing, at best poorly drafted fiction meant to reduce his estimation in the eyes of well-meaning people.”

The law chamber however gave Segalink 14 days ultimatum to retract the tweet on his twitter account.

It also added that Segalink under same ultimatum to publish “a public apology to our client to be issued vide your Twitter account @segalink and to be published for seven (7) consecutive days from the date of first publication.”

“A sum of N3,000,000,000.00 (Three Billion Naira) as damages for the injury caused to our client by your said defamatory publications,” the law chamber listed as the third instruction for Segalink.

It said otherwise “our further instruction is to commence proceedings against you for your defamatory publication against him.”

In his reaction, Awosaya told The Guardian that his “lawyers will respond appropriately later today.”

“There is no point making a media show of a civil litigation,” he added.

Israel Soldier Gets One-Month Jail Over Killing Of Gaza Teen

Israeli soldiers take cover as Palestinian protesters hurl stones during clashes following a weekly protest against the expropriation of Palestinian land by Israel in the village of Kfar Qaddum near the Jewish settlement of Qadumim (Kedumim), in the Israeli-occupied West Bank on August 9, 2019. Jaafar ASHTIYEH / AFP
An Israeli military court has sentenced a soldier to one month in jail over the killing of a Palestinian teenager after he opened fire without authorisation, the army said Wednesday.

The unnamed soldier was convicted Monday for “acting without authorisation in a manner endangering to life and well-being”, it said in a statement.

Othman Rami Halles, 15, was shot dead during protests on the Israel-Gaza border on July 13, 2018, the Palestinian health ministry said at the time.

The army said a probe had found that “the soldier fired at a Palestinian rioter who was climbing on the security fence between Israel and the Gaza Strip”.

The soldier, identified in Israeli media as a sniper, had opened fire “not in accordance with the rules of engagement and not in accordance with the instructions he had received”, it said.

After a plea bargain, the court sentenced the soldier to 30 days in prison with military labour and a suspended term of another 60 days, and he was demoted.

The investigation had found no evidence of a “causal link between the soldier’s fire” and the teenager’s death, the army said.

At least 311 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire in Gaza since protests were launched along the border of the Israeli-blockaded enclave in March 2018, the majority during the demonstrations and clashes.

Eight Israelis have been killed in Gaza-related violence over the same period.

Twitter Bans Political Adverts Worldwide On Its Platform

By Magnus – 2019-10-30 22:48:03 – [ News ]

Twitter said Wednesday it would bar political advertising globally on its platform, responding to growing criticism over misinformation from politicians on social media.

Chief executive Jack Dorsey said in a tweet that the company took the action to head off potential problems from “machine learning-based optimization of messaging and micro-targeting, unchecked misleading information, and deep fakes.”

The move comes with Facebook under pressure to apply fact-checking to politicians running ads with debunked claims.

Dorsey said the new policy, details of which will be unveiled next month, would ban ads on political issues as well as from candidates.

“We considered stopping only candidate ads, but issue ads present a way to circumvent,” he said.

“Additionally, it isn’t fair for everyone but candidates to buy ads for issues they want to push. So we’re stopping these too.”

BREAKING: Court throws out case against 4 RevolutionNow protesters in Ogun

By Magnus – 2019-10-30 22:32:04 – [ News ]

The RevolutionNow protesters
A Magistrate Court in Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State, on Wednesday, 30th October 2019 discharged and acquitted 4 protesters arrested on August 5, 2019, during the RevolutionNow protest.

The court presided over by Magistrate II, Mr O. A. Onaguruwa, upheld the no-case submission made on behalf of the 4 protesters by Lagos-based lawyer and human rights activist, Mr Inibehe Effiong.

The police had arrested Messrs Daniel Abraham, Festus Afofun, Kolawole Seun and Okoro Romeo on August 5, 2019, for protesting at Abeokuta during the nation-wide RevolutionNow protest called by the detained presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Mr Omoyele Sowore.

The four protesters were subsequently arraigned in court on August 7, 2019, on a three-count charge of conspiracy, unlawful assembly and conduct likely to cause a breach of the peace.

Ruling on the no-case submission on Wednesday, Magistrate Onaguruwa held that the argument of the Defendants’ counsel, Mr Effiong, that it was not necessary for the Defendants to enter their defence in the case cannot be faulted because the Prosecution had failed to establish any of the essential elements of the three count charges.

According to the court, the testimony of the prosecution witness as contended by Mr Effiong was not only hearsay and inadmissible based on Section 38 of the Evidence Act, 2019 but was completely discredited under cross-examination.

Magistrate Onaguruwa also wondered why the Investigation Police Officer (IPO) in the case, who is an officer in the rank of a Police Inspector, Inspector Helen would claim in her evidence that it was against the law for the Defendants to have protested without police permit with mufflers and leaflets.

The court relying on the provisions of Section 315 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law of Ogun State 2017 and decided cases, discharged and acquitted the Defendants, given that a discharge in the circumstance amounts to an acquittal.

Responding to the ruling, the counsel to the four protesters who is also the National Legal Adviser of the AAC, Mr Effiong, commended the Magistrate for the well-considered ruling and vowed to sue the Nigeria Police Force for violating the fundamentals rights of his clients to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression.

Effiong in his words said that “Today’s ruling is a vindication of our position that the Nigerian government had no basis in law to have arrested, detained or arraigned citizens who called for Revolution during the peaceful protest of August 5, 2019. I have consistently said that the whole case is a disgraceful attempt by a failed government to silence voices of dissent.”

“This is just the beginning of the end of the shambolic attempt by this regime to illegally deploy the judicial process in a dubious and immoral manner. We will continue to defeat the tyranny of the Buhari’s regime through the law courts.” Effiong said.

One of the protesters, comrade Festus Afofun, expressed his delight with the ruling and also thanked their counsel for defending them pro bono. He promised to take part in any future protest for good governance in the country.

Leicester City’s Iheanacho Sets Personal Best

By Magnus – 2019-10-30 22:17:05 – [ News ]

Kelechi Iheanacho recorded a personal best in Leicester City’s 3-1 English League Cup triumph over Burton Albion on Tuesday.
The Nigeria international put his side ahead in the seventh minute before Youri Tielemans and James Maddison completed the triumph against Nigel Clough’s men.

Although Liam Boyce found the net for the hosts, it stood as consolation with Brendan Rodgers’ side qualifying for the next round.

Following Iheanacho’s contribution, he has now been directly involved in nine goals (six goals and three assists) across his 12 EFL Cup appearances for Leicester and Manchester City combined.

Interestingly, his two goals this term have both come in the competition – having found the net against Luton Town in September.

Despite this impressive stat, the Nigerian is enduring a torrid time at the King Power Stadium following his inability to get regular playing time.

With his goal against Burton, Rodgers will be hoping that the former Manchester City man can continue with his goalscoring form as they look to overcome Crystal Palace on Sunday.

They are third in the English top-flight log with 20 points after 10 outings.

The Football Association will not be taking any action against Xhaka after he was seen swearing and gesturing to Arsenal fans as he was booed off.

Xhaka, who has conceded more fouls (22) than any other Premier League player this season, has been substituted in three of the nine Premier League matches he has featured in this term.

It is not known at this stage whether Arsenal are considering removing the captain’s armband from Xhaka. Asked after the game if Xhaka would remain Arsenal captain, boss Unai Emery said: “Now is not the time to talk about that.”

in their next Premier League match despite signing a new long-term Arsenal contract in June last year. Speaking after Arsenal’s draw with Palace, Gunners head coach Emery admitted Xhaka’s reaction was wrong and refused to back him when asked if he would remain captain.

“He was wrong,” Emery said after the game. “We need to stay calm and speak to him internally about that. He was not right to do that.

“We are working with the club and the players to play under pressure.

“We are going to speak with him because the reaction was wrong. We are here because we have supporters. We work for them and need to have respect for them when they are applauding us and criticizing us.”
