The Arewa Youth Consultative Council (AYCC) has asked the Federal Government to block ‘sexual and immorally-related’ websites from the Nigerian cyberspace.

In a statement signed by the group’s spokesperson, Muhammad Ibrahim, on Friday, August 14, 2020, AYCC said it is concerned by the exposure of Nigerian youths to ‘sexual contamination’.

The group said the exposure of Nigerian youths to sexual content is fueling a culture of indecency, immorality and increasing cases of sexual misbehaviours.

AYCC, in the letter addressed to the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami, called on the government to enforce a strict monitoring policy that will remove pornographic content.

“We resolved to write to you as concerned citizens to call on your quick intervention in blocking sexual and immorality related sites in the Nigerian cyberspace to sanitise the reckless behaviour and continuous immoral engagements among youths for sustainable development and progress of our societies,” the statement read.

AYCC also said the government should ‘force’ service providers to protect Nigerians from content involving violence and terrorism.

The youth group noted that the censure will prevent future catastrophe that will erase the possibility of a lost society.

The group suggested that individuals or companies that refuse to comply with the censure should be fined millions and billions of naira, respectively.

In his response on his Twitter account, Pantami said the group should redirect the request instead to the Ministry of Information and Culture, headed by Lai Mohammed.

Teacher gets life imprisonment for defiling his Pastor’s 10-year-old daughter in Ondo

Published

on August 14, 2020

Three days after a Keke NAPEP driver was sentenced to life imprisonment for raping a minor, an Ondo State High Court sitting in Akure has again sentenced a teacher, Omotayo Adanlawo to life imprisonment for raping a 10-year-old girl.

The judge, Justice Samuel Bola, who gave the judgement, said the defendant failed to give convincing evidence and testimony to prove his innocence in the rape allegations.

It was gathered that on August 24 2018, Adanlawo who used to attend the girl’s father’s church, allegedly went to the victim’s house at Iju in Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State while she was alone and forcefully had carnal knowledge of her after which he threatened her not to tell anyone else she will die.

After the incident, the victim was said to have complained of stomach pains as she could not walk afterwards prompting her mother to take her to a hospital for examination where it was revealed that the girl had been defiled.

According to a family source, after rigorous interrogation, the little girl opened up and said her father’s church member, Adanlawo had sexual intercourse with her.

The case was then reported at Iju-Itaogbolu Divisional Headquarters before being transfered to Ala area command, and a medical report revealed that there was actual penetration into the 10-year-old girl’s private part.

Based on the legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecution, Adanlawo was dragged before Justice Samuel Bola on a one-count charge of rape contrary to Section 357 and punishable under Section 358 of the Criminal Law of Ondo state.

While the prosecution led by a state counsel, Stella Adegoke called five witnesses including the victim and her mother, the defendant was the only one who stood for himself.NEWS:  Farmer remanded for allegedly raping 35-year-old woman

Adanlawo in his statement before the police claimed the young girl told him to lay on her after asking for 50 naira and ‘chinchin’, but during cross examination he had claimed that he was at home at the time of the incident.

He also claimed to be battling with hernia and as such was not medically fit to have had sexual intercourse with the girl.

Justice Bola in his judgement, however, said the prosecution was able to prove there was penetration in the rape allegation against Adanlawo.

He also said the defendant gave no medical report to prove his condition as well as any evidence to suggest he was in his house as claimed on the day of the incident.

The Judge subsequently sentenced Adanlawo to life imprisonment in line with section 358 of the crimanal laws of Ondo State.

Reacting to the judgement, the Attorney General and State Commissioner for Justice, Adekola Olawoye said the judgement had shown that it would not be business as usual for paedophiles in the state.

Recall that a middle-aged man, Blessing Kingsley was on Monday sentenced to life imprisonment by a High Court sitting in Akure, the Ondo State capital, for raping a 14-year-old girl.

BREAKING: Atiku defends Mailafiya, condemns NBC prohibition Code

Politics Nigeria

 Politics Nigeria45 mins ago

Former Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Atiku Abubakar has condemned the N5 million fine placed on radio station, Nigeria Info over an interview with a former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Dr. Obadiah Mailafiya.

Atiku condemned the new prohibition code put in place by the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission, NBC, adding that it was designed to gag the media. Below is the full statement sent to POLITICS NIGERIA;

“We are compelled to react to the Nigeria Broadcasting Commission code concerning infringement on hate speech and the operational style that media houses should employ to conform with the new regulation.”

“While there is no disputation over the fact that hate speech portends an existential threat to the enterprise of journalistic reporting and, in fact, inhibits the workings for a free society, it is absolutely repugnant that powers that be would instrumentalize the prevention of hate speech as a means of constricting free speech.”

“It is globally acknowledged that one of the core functions of the mass media is to inform the society on all ranges of issues, not even to the exclusion of national security issues. The mass media has a role to play in ensuring that all possible shades of opinions are given access to the media platform.”

“In many advanced democracies the world over, criminals on even wanted lists of law enforcement agencies have reached out to the media to express their opinions about the crimes that they had perpetrated and the media space was not denied to them. As a matter of fact, it seems somewhat contradictory that a country like ours, which is in the throes of national security skirmishes, would choose to shrink media access to critical information. It is not known if any society had won the war against terrorism by placing a restriction to access to information, in the way the NBC had done.”

“In a particular reference to the penalty handed down to the operators of 99.3 FM Nigeria Info, we disagree wholeheartedly with the argument of the NBC that the interview that the station had with Dr. Obadiah Mailafia constitutes any infringement or if at all it exposes the station to trading in hate speech.”

“Whether or not what Dr. Mailafia said on the radio station was a false claim, it is outside of the objectives of a responsible regulatory framework to sanction a radio station for a comment an individual made, more so that the personality in question, Dr. Obadiah, had been quizzed and released by law enforcement agents. If for any reason the authorities are not satisfied with his explanations, they are at liberty to prosecute him in court, but not to make a scapegoat of the media platform that provides opportunities for citizens to ventilate their views.”

“The claim by the management of NBC that “this (the penalty) is expected to serve as a deterrent to all other broadcast stations in Nigeria who are quick to provide platform for subversive rhetorics and expositions of spurious and unverifiable claims, to desist from such”, is a naked attempt to gag the media in Nigeria.”

“We, therefore, call on the Nigeria Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to cause a review of the hate speech prohibition code because the very interpretation of same is offensive to the notion of free speech which is an essential ingredient of participatory democracy that Nigeria operates.”

“We also demand of the NBC to drop the penalty against the operators of 99.3 Nigeria Info FM on account of the fact that the penalty is at best ill-thought out.”

“Lastly, we want to refresh the memories of generality of Nigerians that the Nigerian media has been in the frontline of the vanguard in the fight against military rule and restoration of a democratic order. In other words, it is very disappointing that under the watch of the All Progressives Congress (APC) the media is, yet again, being targeted for extermination.”

NBC Fines Nigeria Info N5 Million Over Mailafia Interview by oshozondii: 12:51pm

The National Broadcasting Commission has ordered a radio station, Nigeria Info, to pay a N5m fine for airing comments made by a former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Dr Obadiah Mailaifa, on terrorism in the country.

The NBC management described the broadcast as “unprofessional” in a statement signed by the management of the organisation.

The statement reads, “The National Broadcasting Commission has noted with grave concern, the unprofessional conduct of Nigeria Info 99.3FM, Lagos, in the handling of the programme ‘Morning CrossFire’ aired on August 10, 2020, between 8.30am and 9.00am.

“The station provided its platform for the guest, Dr Mailafia Obadiah, to promote unverifiable and inciting views that could encourage or incite crime and lead to public disorder.

“Dr Mailafia Obadia’s comments on the Southern Kaduna crisis were devoid of facts and by broadcasting the same to the public, Nigeria Info 99.3FM, is in violation of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code.

“In line with the amendment of the 6th edition of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code, Nigeria Info 99.3FM Lagos, has been fined the sum of N5,000,000.00 (Five Million Naira), only.

“This is expected to serve as a deterrent to all other broadcast stations in Nigeria who are quick to provide a platform for subversive rhetoric and the expositions of spurious and unverifiable claims, to desist from such.”

Mailafia had during the radio programme said that repentant Boko Haram members revealed to him that a serving Northern governor was a commander of the terrorist group.

He was subsequently invited for questioning by the Department of State Services on Wednesday but was released after six hours.

US Proposes Change To Shower Rules After Trump’s Hair-washing Moan by Missyajoke: 8:04am

President believes shower water does not flow fast enough. ‘My hair … I don’t know about you, but it has to be perfect’.
The US president’s hair-washing complaints on Wednesday prompted the government to propose an easing of shower pressure standards.
The Trump administration proposed rule changes that would allow shower heads to boost water pressure, after Donald Trump repeatedly complained that bathroom fixtures do not work to his liking. The Department of Energy plan followed comments from Trump last month at a White House event on rolling back regulations. He said he believed water does not come out fast enough from fixtures.

“So what do you do? You just stand there longer or you take a shower longer? Because my hair – I don’t know about you, but it has to be perfect,” he said.

Last December, Trump said environmental regulators were looking at sinks, faucets and toilets to revise rules meant to conserve water and fuel that heats it.

“People are flushing toilets 10 times, 15 times, as opposed to once,” Trump told a meeting of small business leaders at the White House.

Consumer groups decried the plan, saying current rules saved consumers money by conserving water and fuel.

The proposal would effectively allow shower fixtures to include multiple shower heads that would get around the 2.5 gallon per minute standard Congress set in 1992, when Trump’s fellow Republican George HW Bush was president.

The energy department also proposed easier standards on washing machines. The Trump administration says its regulatory rollbacks save average American households $3,100 a year. But conservationists say easing bathroom fixture standards could boost energy and water costs.

It was uncertain whether the plan would be finalized. Trump is campaigning for reelection and trails in opinion polls ahead of the vote on 3 November. If he wins and the proposal advances it could also face court battles.

Boko Haram Now Recruiting Child Soldiers – MNJTFPosted by Kabir Afolayan. on Aug 13, 2020 0

The Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) has raised an alarm of Boko Haram recruiting child soldiers to resuscitate its declining influence in the Lake Chad Basin.
Nigerian army colonel and Chief of Military Public Information for MNJTF, Timothy Antigha who revealed this in a statement released from N’Djamena – Chad on Thursday August 12,

said the disturbing development was brought in by intelligence sources and corroborated by concerned individuals and groups days ago.

Antigha who noted that the recent recruitment of child soldiers by the terrorist group might be due to the recent mass surrender of its members to the military said the intelligence was confirmed after the terrorist group released a video of children dressed in military fatigue and holding assault rifles during the Sallah celebrations.

He said;

“Earlier, Boko Haram have engaged in the mass abduction of school girls, sexual enslavement of women and mass murder of innocent civilians.

“This recent employment of child soldiers is as a result of frustration caused by several operational losses, leadership crises, as well as disillusionment among fighters and their subsequent surrender in hundreds to the MNJTF.

“The focus on children is because they are easier to manipulate and indoctrinate than the adults within the region who can now see through the veil of deceit.

“Arising from this latest atrocity by Boko Haram, the MNJTF urges parents, local authorities, religious and traditional institutions to be vigilant and promptly alert security agencies of any overt or covert attempts to recruit their children and wards.”

Antigha also warned youths against falling for the terrorist group’s promises of power and influence, economic prosperity and spiritual growth.

He added;

“The stories of hardship and evil within the terrorist organisations as revealed by all surrendered Boko Haram fighters should be sufficient notice that Boko Haram and ISWAP have nothing good to offer anyone.

“It would be recalled that the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child on the involvement of children in armed conflict forbids the recruitment and use of children in Armed Conflicts.

“The Protocol states among others that; “Armed groups distinct from armed forces of a country should not, under any circumstances, recruit or use in hostilities anyone under 18.

“It is against this background that the MNJTF is drawing the attention of the United Nations, its relevant agencies and other stakeholders to the latest acts of inhumanity and desperation by Boko Haram, and urges severe condemnation and other necessary action.

“On our part, the MNJTF will continue with activities that are focused on the protection of children and other vulnerable groups within its area of operation.”

JUST IN!!! Falana Seeks Prosecution Of Motorcyclist Over Alleged Rape In Ekiti StatePosted by Olowo Yusuf. on Aug 13, 2020 0

A non-governmental organization, Women Empowerment and Legal Aid, (WELA) has appealed to police authorities in Ekiti State to act appropriately in the rape case involving one of its female clients.
The Chairperson of the organisation, Barrister Funmi Falana, in a letter to the state Commission of Police, Mr Tunde Mobayo said the matter must be properly investigated.

Falana in the letter entitled: Complaint On Rape, Assault and Inhuman Treatment On Miss Adesina, signed by Taiwo Omidoyin, also demanded the prosecution of the perpetrator of the inhuman act.

“We received a complaint in our office from the family members of Miss Adesina, (herein after referred to as our client), a 16-year-old girl, who is a victim of rape, assault and inhuman treatment.

“We are informed that the matter has now been transferred to the JWC unit of your command and the perpetrator already detained therein while our client is currently receiving medical care in the hospital.

“While we commend the efforts of the police so far in coming to the aid of our client, we passionately appeal to you (CP) to use your good office to ensure proper investigation of the matter, diligent prosecution and making the perpetrator face the full wrath of the law. We count on your utmost professionalism in this regard sir”.

Narrating how the incident occurred, Falana said,

“Our client was around the vicinity of Secretariat road, Ado Ekiti around 2pm on August 10, 2020, when a motorcyclist approached her that someone requests to buy groundnut, which she sells on the next street.

“The motorcyclist offered to convey her to the purported customer, but the biker rode to an unknown place, tricked, threatened and assaulted her and forcefully had carnal knowledge of her after robbing her of her money.

“It was some neighbours who heard the shout of our client that broke into the said apartment, got hold of the perpetrator and handed the matter to the police”.

IRONY OF NIGERIA: After Diezani Condmned Yahoo-Yahoo, Boko Haram’s Shekau Now Condemns Death SentenceTrending TodayAug 12, 2020Read original

For the last one hour on social media, several Nigerians have been trying their best to wrap their heads around the latest comments on the idea of death penalty from Boko Haram commander, Abubakar Shekau.

Source: Businessday

HumAngle, a media house focused on conflict and insecurity in Africa, just reported that Shekau in a new audio condemned the Kano State death sentence. HumAngle said on Twitter:

“Abubakar Shekau, in a new audio, has condemned the Kano State death sentence. According to the embattled #BokoHaram leader, there is no difference between the ‘blasphemer’ and those who sentenced him to death. More details coming soon.”

This probably comes on the heels of news that Yahaya Sharif-Aminu, a 22-year-old Islamic gospel singer, has been sentenced to death under Sharia laws for blaspheming against the Prophet Muhammed in a song.

Source: YouTube

For any other person condemning the death sentence given to Sharif-Aminu, it wouldn’t have been so surprising. However, it is not news that Shekau’s track record as commander of Boko Haram has been one of reckless killing, violence and bloodshed.

This has caused many on Twitter to ponder on how the most unlikely of people in Nigeria position themselves as heroes in a situation where they are actually anti-heroes.

Shekau’s condemnation of the death sentence is an irony that is quite similar to earlier this week when former minister Diezani Alison-Madueke, spoke out against internet fraud in Nigeria. She made her claims despite the massive fraud allegation that presently rocks her.

Source: Premium Times Nigeria

People on Twitter have been weighing the two scenarios involving Diezani and Shekau and shaking heads at this common irony in the country. Here are a few of their reactions:

@Olanrewaju_Rex, “Diezani said yahoo boys are becoming role models. Now, Shekau said killing is wrong. This country is just irony and vibes”

@UgwunnaEjikem, “Wait! so Shekau an international terrorist released an audio clip condemning the death sentence of the Kano blasphemer? lmfao This country is not a zoo, it’s the biggest circus in the world.”

Source: BBC

@AM_Saleeem, “Shekau who killed thousands innocent Nigerian souls, has condemned the death sentenced of the ‘Blasphemer’ by Kano Sharia court. Next joke please.”

What is your take on this irony of Shekau condemning killing or the death sentence?

According to Osinbajo, the interaction between the Federal Government and the promoters of the vaccine candidate is an important conversation.

“It is important for us that we are prioritised as the largest country in Africa in the distribution of the best COVID-19 vaccine when it is eventually ready.

“Our priority is the health of the Nigerian citizens; we continue to engage and intend to look at every possible option from all manufacturers of a good vaccine.

“We want to do the very best for our people in this regard,” he said.

The vice president asked several questions about the COVID-19 vaccine candidate including how quickly Nigeria could get the vaccine once it was safely ready.

Responding, Mr Subair Olayinka, the Pfizer Country Manager and Representative in Africa, who spoke for the promoters, said that Nigeria would be a priority for the vaccine supply to Africa.

He said that although the vaccine trials were not going on in Nigeria at present, the trials were ongoing in parts of the African continent.

Olayinka said that the trials would be entering the third phase having concluded the first two phases successfully.

On his part, Ehanire said that the Federal Government would consider quality, appropriate volume, and how well and quick a vaccine could be delivered to Nigeria in deciding which manufacturer to make the supply.
